Motorcyclist Shawn Woolum Killed in fatal Crash at State Route 4 Intersection in Marion County

A tragic crash in Marion County has claimed the life of a local motorcyclist and left a community mourning after a devastating collision at a busy intersection Monday evening. Authorities say 54-year-old Shawn R. Woolum of Marion died following the two-vehicle accident that occurred in Pleasant Township, bringing heartbreak to family members, friends, and all who knew him.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the fatal crash happened on May 18, 2026, at approximately 6:08 p.m. at the intersection of State Route 4 and White Oaks Road. Troopers from the Marion Post responded to the scene alongside several emergency agencies after reports of a serious collision involving a passenger vehicle and a motorcycle.

Investigators said the crash involved a red 2011 Kia Forte driven by a 16-year-old juvenile and a black 2017 Indian Chieftain Dark Horse motorcycle operated by Shawn Woolum. Preliminary findings indicate the teenage driver was traveling northbound on State Route 4 and attempted to make a left turn onto White Oaks Road. At the same time, Woolum was traveling southbound on his motorcycle when the Kia reportedly failed to yield, causing the motorcycle to strike the vehicle in a violent collision.

The impact threw Woolum from the motorcycle, leaving him with critical injuries. Emergency responders from Pleasant Township EMS rushed to the scene and quickly transported him to Marion General Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Woolum was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. Officials also stated that he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The juvenile driver of the Kia Forte was transported to the same hospital by Marion Township EMS, where he was treated for minor injuries.

Several agencies assisted at the crash site as emergency crews worked to secure the area and help those involved. Pleasant Township Fire and EMS, Marion Township EMS, Kirby’s Towing, and Precision Towing all responded during the aftermath of the collision. The scene remained active for some time as investigators gathered evidence and crews cleared the damaged vehicles from the roadway.

News of Shawn Woolum’s death has left many in the Marion community saddened by the sudden tragedy. Loved ones are now grieving the loss of a man whose life ended in a matter of seconds on a familiar roadway.
