The Temperance community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 48-year-old Clayton J. Devol, who was killed Saturday night in a devastating crash involving an off-road motorcycle and a pickup truck in Bedford Township, Michigan. Family members, friends, and neighbors are struggling to come to terms with the sudden tragedy that ended a life far too soon and left a community grieving in shock.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 9:18 p.m. on May 16, 2026, at the intersection of Secor Road and St. Anthony Road. Investigators reported that Arnold L. Meiring, 68, of Temperance, was driving a black 2014 Chevrolet Silverado northbound on Secor Road when he attempted to turn west onto St. Anthony Road. During the turn, the pickup truck entered the path of an off-road motorcycle traveling southbound, operated by Clayton J. Devol.
Authorities said the motorcycle collided with the turning pickup truck, causing a violent impact that threw Devol from the bike. He came to rest on the east side of Secor Road, while the motorcycle reportedly burst into flames after the collision. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and attempted to assist, but Devol tragically succumbed to the injuries he suffered in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials stated that Meiring was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and that the airbags in the Chevrolet Silverado deployed during the collision. He was not injured. Investigators also revealed several factors that may have contributed to the deadly incident. According to authorities, Devol was not wearing a helmet, and the off-road motorcycle did not have a headlight or taillight equipped. Officials further noted that the motorcycle was not authorized for roadway use.
The tragic crash prompted a large emergency response from multiple agencies, including the Bedford Township Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Unit and Chaplain Program. First responders not only handled the dangerous scene but also worked to provide emotional support to those affected by the devastating loss.
As the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Services Division continues its investigation, the Temperance community is left mourning a life lost in an instant. Friends and loved ones are remembering Clayton J. Devol for the life he lived and the memories he shared with those around him. The tragedy serves as a painful reminder of how quickly lives can change and how deeply such losses impact families, friends, and entire communities.
