Two Dead, Four Injured in Tragic Head-On Crash on Hawaii Island

A tragic head-on collision on Hawaii Island claimed the lives of two young people and left four others injured Friday afternoon along Daniel K. Inouye Highway. The devastating crash has left families grieving and shocked the local community as authorities continue investigating the circumstances that led to the deadly incident.

According to Hawaii Island police, the collision occurred at approximately 3:38 p.m. on May 15, 2026. Investigators said a 2018 Toyota Tacoma was traveling westbound when the driver reportedly lost control while rounding a curve on the highway. Authorities believe the pickup crossed into the opposite lane and crashed head-on into an eastbound 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 that was towing a trailer carrying a mini excavator at the time of impact.

The violent collision proved fatal for two passengers riding inside the Toyota Tacoma. Police identified one of the victims as 29-year-old Troy Rasse of Pahoa, who was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe injuries sustained in the crash. The second victim was identified as 24-year-old Jadelyn Cariaga of Hilo, who also suffered fatal injuries. News of their sudden deaths has left loved ones mourning the loss of two lives taken far too soon.

Authorities said several others involved in the crash survived but suffered injuries of varying severity. A third passenger in the Toyota and the driver of the Dodge Ram sustained serious injuries and were airlifted to The Queen’s Medical Center for emergency treatment. Meanwhile, the driver of the Toyota Tacoma and another passenger riding in the Dodge were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that officials described as non-life-threatening.

Investigators noted that the roadway was wet at the time of the crash, which may have contributed to the tragic collision. Officials continue to examine evidence from the scene as they work to determine exactly what caused the Toyota to lose control. The crash caused significant damage to both vehicles and temporarily disrupted traffic along the busy highway while emergency crews responded.

As the investigation remains ongoing, the Hawaii Island community is reflecting on the heartbreaking consequences of sudden roadway tragedies. Family members and friends are now left mourning the painful loss of Troy Rasse and Jadelyn Cariaga while praying for the recovery of those injured. The devastating collision serves as another reminder of how quickly lives can be forever changed in a single moment on the road.
