The city of Kansas City is facing shock and grief after a fatal officer-involved shooting early Thursday morning left 27-year-old Jesse Fitzgeral dead outside the Concord Square Apartments. According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), officers initially responded around 5 a.m. after a 911 call from a woman requesting help with a disturbance involving her son inside an apartment in the 1400 block of North 78th Place. When officers arrived, they reportedly saw Fitzgeral inside an SUV parked outside the complex, but he drove away before they could speak with him.
Officials said the situation escalated after the woman made a second 911 call around 6 a.m. Officers returned to the apartment complex and found the SUV again parked outside with its engine running but no one inside. As officers approached the building to check on the caller, investigators say Fitzgeral suddenly ran toward them holding what was described as a metal object.
