A quiet community in southern Indiana is mourning after a tragic incident left three people dead inside a home on Wednesday evening in what authorities believe was a murder-suicide. The discovery has deeply shaken residents of Elizabeth, Indiana, as investigators work to piece together the events that led to the devastating loss of life.
According to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were called just before 7:30 p.m. to a residence on Greenbrier Road SE for a welfare check. The request was made by a family member who was concerned about a suicidal man living at the home. Deputies responded urgently, hoping to ensure the safety of everyone inside the property.
When officers arrived, they made a grim discovery outside the home. Authorities said 36-year-old Brett Dixon was found deceased on the front porch with two gunshot wounds. The situation became even more troubling as deputies entered the residence and continued their search for additional occupants inside.
Inside the home, officers found 59-year-old Melissa Cochran Dixon and 61-year-old Paul Dixon, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Investigators reported that Paul Dixon was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Based on initial findings at the scene, authorities believe Paul Dixon shot both Melissa Cochran Dixon and Brett Dixon before turning the weapon on himself.
Officials with the sheriff’s department said there is no ongoing threat to the public. Autopsies have been scheduled for all three individuals as part of the ongoing investigation.
