Tennessee Truck Driver Praised as Hero After Risking His Life to Save Woman on Interstate 840

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. — What began as a frightening early morning crash on Interstate 840 quickly turned into a story of extraordinary courage after a Tennessee truck driver risked his own life to rescue an injured woman trapped on the highway. The heroic actions of Nathan Harrell are now being praised across the state after he suffered severe injuries while helping Kayla Gilbert escape from a potentially deadly situation.

According to reports, the terrifying incident unfolded early Sunday morning as Gilbert was driving home along I-840 in Rutherford County. During the drive, one of her vehicle’s front tires suddenly blew out, causing her to lose control before crashing into the concrete median barrier. Authorities said the damaged vehicle came to rest partially inside an active traffic lane on the dark interstate, creating a highly dangerous scene for both Gilbert and approaching motorists.

Gilbert suffered a serious gash to her forehead during the crash that later required eight stitches. Injured and disoriented, she remained trapped inside the vehicle moments after the collision. That is when Nathan Harrell, a passing truck driver, noticed the wreck and immediately stopped to help. Realizing the vehicle’s position in the roadway placed Gilbert in immediate danger, Harrell reportedly began yelling for her to get out of the car as quickly as possible.

Officials and family members say Harrell did not hesitate to put himself at risk in order to save the injured woman. Just moments after helping Gilbert escape the wreckage, another vehicle reportedly crashed into part of the disabled car. Although Gilbert managed to avoid being struck, Harrell suddenly found himself trapped with almost no way to escape the danger surrounding him.

In a desperate attempt to avoid the oncoming threat, Harrell jumped over a nearby concrete barrier, unaware that the crash scene was located on an overpass. He fell approximately 25 feet to the ground below. The devastating fall left him with multiple serious injuries, including five broken bones in his back, nine broken ribs, a punctured lung, and internal bleeding. Despite the severity of the injuries, doctors expect him to recover, though his rehabilitation is expected to take significant time.

Gilbert later visited Harrell in the hospital to personally thank the man she now calls her “guardian angel.” During the emotional meeting, she hugged him and presented him with a Superman shirt as a symbol of his bravery and selflessness. Family members say Harrell supports three children and is the primary provider for his household, making his recovery especially challenging. Across Tennessee and beyond, many are now praising Nathan Harrell as a true hero whose quick actions likely prevented an even greater tragedy on Interstate 840.
