Couple Killed in Devastating Crash with Tractor-Trailer in Cullman County

CULLMAN COUNTY, ALABAMA — A tragic two-vehicle crash on Sunday evening has claimed the lives of an elderly couple, leaving a community in mourning and authorities searching for answers. Officials say the collision happened along a rural highway and involved a passenger vehicle and a large tractor-trailer.

According to investigators, the crash occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Alabama State Route 91 near County Road 649, about six miles east of the town of Holly Pond, Alabama. Emergency crews were quickly dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a serious collision involving two vehicles.

Authorities say one of the vehicles was driven by 84-year-old O’Neal Kelley of Arab, Alabama. Preliminary findings indicate that his vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer under circumstances that are still being investigated. The impact of the crash caused severe damage and left both occupants of the passenger vehicle with critical injuries.

O’Neal Kelley was pronounced dead at the scene due to the extent of his injuries. His passenger, 79-year-old Martha Kelley, was critically hurt and rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she later died from her injuries, adding to the heartbreak of the incident.

Officials have not yet released details about the driver of the tractor-trailer or confirmed whether anyone else was injured in the crash. Investigators are still working to determine exactly what led to the collision and whether factors such as speed, visibility, or road conditions may have played a role.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Highway Patrol Division has taken over the investigation and is conducting a full review of the crash. Authorities say they will continue gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses to piece together what happened. As the investigation moves forward, the community is left grieving the sudden loss of two lives in a tragic roadway accident.
