Authorities in Portland are investigating the discovery of a body found in the Willamette River near the Burnside Bridge on Sunday morning. The case has raised serious questions, especially as officials work to determine whether it may be connected to a recent fatal crash in the same area.
According to the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 caller reported seeing a body in the water at approximately 11:20 a.m. Deputies, along with the River Patrol Unit and Dive Team, responded quickly to the scene. The body was recovered from the river and transported for further examination.
Officials said the remains have been sent to the medical examiner’s office for identification and autopsy. Preliminary information has referenced the name Jackob Joseph, but authorities stressed that formal identification will only be confirmed after forensic testing and notification of the next of kin.
The discovery comes just days after a separate incident on April 6, when a vehicle carrying four people went into the Willamette River following a police pursuit. In that crash, one person survived, two individuals were recovered, and a fourth occupant remained missing, raising the possibility that the two cases could be related.
Because the body was found near the same general area as the earlier crash, investigators are carefully examining whether there is any connection. However, officials have made clear that it is too early to confirm any link, and multiple scenarios are still being considered as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities are urging the public to avoid speculation while the facts are still being established. The investigation remains active as officials await autopsy results and continue gathering evidence. In the meantime, the discovery has added another layer of uncertainty to an already complex and emotional situation for those involved.
