The community of Coal City is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 21-year-old Sean Michael Rentauskas, who died following a devastating crash late Saturday night in Morris. The tragic incident has left family, friends, and residents grappling with the sudden loss of a young life.
Emergency responders were dispatched around 11:30 p.m. to Ottawa Bend Drive at the West Branch of Nettle Creek, near Gebhard Woods State Park, after reports of a vehicle submerged in the water. Upon arrival, crews discovered a car fully underwater following what authorities described as a serious single-vehicle crash.
According to the Grundy County Coroner’s Office, Sean had been traveling eastbound on Old Stage Road when he approached a curve near the park’s entrance. Investigators say he was unable to navigate the turn, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway, enter Nettle Creek, and overturn before coming to rest upside down.
Rescue swimmers responded swiftly and were able to remove Sean, who was the sole occupant, from the submerged vehicle. He was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, but despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was later pronounced dead in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The tragic loss has deeply affected loved ones and the wider Illinois community, as those who knew Sean remember him for his life and the moments they shared together. His passing has left an overwhelming sense of grief as many struggle to process the sudden and unexpected tragedy.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, working to determine all contributing factors. As the community mourns, residents are coming together in support of Sean’s family, offering comfort, prayers, and strength during this incredibly difficult time.
