53-year-old Veteran Miner, Aaron Warrix Killed in Raleigh County Accident

A tragic mining accident in Raleigh County, West Virginia, has claimed the life of a longtime worker, leaving a deep sense of loss across the community. The heartbreaking incident occurred on Thursday, April 2, and has drawn attention to the dangers faced daily by those working in the mining industry.

Authorities identified the victim as 53-year-old Aaron Warrix of Chapmanville. Warrix was employed as a shuttle operator at the Panther Eagle Horse Creek Mine, where he had worked for approximately four and a half years. Known among coworkers as dedicated and reliable, his sudden death has left many in shock.

According to initial reports, Warrix was fatally struck by a piece of rock while performing his duties inside the mine. The incident happened during regular operations, though the exact sequence of events leading up to the accident is still under investigation. Emergency responders and state mine safety officials arrived quickly and have remained on site.

The mine is operated by Marfork Coal Company, LLC, a subsidiary of Alpha Metallurgical Resources. Company officials confirmed they are cooperating fully with federal and state agencies to determine the cause of the accident and review safety procedures. The focus remains on understanding how the tragedy occurred and preventing similar incidents in the future.

In a statement, Alpha Metallurgical Resources CEO Andy Eidson expressed sorrow over the loss, saying the company is “heartbroken” by Warrix’s passing. He extended condolences to Warrix’s wife, family, friends, and coworkers, emphasizing the emotional impact the loss has had on everyone connected to the operation.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey also spoke out, saying he and his wife, Denise, are “deeply saddened” by the tragic death. He described Warrix as a reflection of the strength, resilience, and strong work ethic that define the people of West Virginia. The governor urged residents to keep Warrix’s loved ones and fellow miners in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
