Five Lives Lost in Devastating Train Crash in Stone County

STONE COUNTY, MS — A tragic collision between a van and a freight train has claimed the lives of five people, leaving the northern Stone County community in deep mourning. The devastating crash occurred Friday afternoon and has shaken residents as authorities work to uncover what led to the fatal incident.

According to Stone County Sheriff Todd Stewart, the crash happened around 1 p.m. on Pump Branch Road near Highway 49. Reports indicate that the westbound van collided with a northbound freight train. The force of the impact was so severe that the van was pushed nearly 500 yards down the tracks, highlighting the intensity of the crash.

Stone County Coroner Wayne Flurry has identified the five victims as Ryan C. Peterson, 26, a corrections officer with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office; Demarcus Perkins, 23; Kristina Carver, 45; and her two daughters, Emley Chamblee, 22, and Sarabeth Chamblee, 20. Their sudden deaths have left families and loved ones heartbroken.

Authorities confirmed that a sixth occupant, a 23-year-old woman, survived the crash but suffered serious injuries. She was airlifted by medical helicopter to a hospital in New Orleans for emergency treatment. Her current condition has not yet been released, and many are hoping for her recovery.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene shortly after the crash, but the damage was severe. Five of the six occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators are now working to determine what caused the collision, including whether visibility issues, warning signals, or other factors may have played a role.

As the investigation continues, the community is coming together to grieve the lives lost in this heartbreaking accident. Authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
