COLUMBUS, Ohio — A fatal crash early Thursday morning has left the Columbus community grieving the loss of 50-year-old John White. The incident occurred on the exit ramp from Interstate 270 North to State Route 61 East, prompting an immediate response from multiple law enforcement agencies.
According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies, along with officers from the Columbus Division of Police, were dispatched around 6:30 a.m. on March 27, 2026. The crash involved a white 2024 Ford Maverick traveling east on State Route 161 as it navigated the curve from the ramp off I-270 North.
Authorities report that White lost control of the vehicle shortly after entering the curve, striking a barrier with significant force. First responders arrived quickly and found him critically injured. He was transported immediately to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead at 6:49 a.m., just under 20 minutes after arrival.
The crash caused major traffic disruptions in the area. Both northbound and southbound ramps from I-270 to SR-161 remained closed for over three hours, reopening around 9:30 a.m. Commuters faced heavy delays, and drivers were rerouted to alternate roads while authorities cleared the scene. The Blendon Township Police also assisted at the crash site alongside the FCSO and Columbus Division of Police.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit is leading the ongoing investigation. Officials are reviewing all factors, including road conditions, possible mechanical issues, and other circumstances that could have contributed to the crash. At this time, authorities have confirmed White as the sole identified victim, and no information has been released regarding passengers.
