SAN ANGELO, Texas — Tragedy struck Wednesday night on U.S. 87 between San Angelo and Wall when a two-vehicle crash left one man dead and another injured, authorities reported. The collision occurred around 7:49 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. 87 and Fairview School Road, sending shockwaves through the local community.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS), a 2017 GMC Terrain SUV was traveling northbound when it was struck from behind by a 2017 Chevrolet Trax SUV. Investigators said the driver of the Trax failed to control their speed while following the GMC in the same direction, leading to the fatal collision.
The driver of the Chevrolet Trax, 52-year-old Jason Richard Ward of San Angelo, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Randy Harris. TxDPS confirmed that Ward was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which may have contributed to the severity of his injuries.
The driver of the GMC Terrain, a 34-year-old resident of San Angelo, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Shannon Medical Center. Authorities reported that this driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, which likely helped prevent more serious injuries.
TxDPS noted that weather conditions were clear and the roads were dry when the collision occurred, ruling out hazardous conditions as a factor. Investigators continue to examine the scene, review statements, and gather evidence to determine the exact circumstances leading up to the crash.
This accident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of safe driving practices, including maintaining a proper following distance and wearing seatbelts. Family, friends, and the San Angelo community are mourning the loss of Jason Richard Ward, whose life was tragically cut short. Authorities urge anyone with information about the crash to contact TxDPS as the investigation continues.
