What began as a quiet evening quickly turned into a heartbreaking scene that has left the community shaken.
Troopers from the WVSP Elkins Detachment said they were alerted around 5:45 p.m. to a vehicle-and-pedestrian incident at the intersection of U.S. Route 219 and Harpertown-Gilman Road. Once first responders arrived, they immediately began assessing the situation, securing the area, and gathering early details about how the collision occurred. It was during these initial moments that officers confirmed the bicyclist’s identity and notified the public of the fatal outcome.
Officials explained that Spencer had been riding along a nearby bike trail shortly before the crash. He later attempted to cross Route 219, a busy roadway known for steady traffic, when he was struck by the approaching pickup truck. Despite rapid emergency response efforts, Spencer could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.
