Two College Students Found Dead in Suspected Murder-Suicide in Pikeville

The community of Pikeville is mourning the tragic loss of two young men whose lives ended in what authorities believe to be a murder-suicide. The deaths of Nicholas D. Hopkins, 36, and Travis L. Thompson, 22, have left families, friends, and classmates devastated as they struggle to come to terms with the heartbreaking news.

According to officials from the Pike County Coroner’s Office, both Hopkins and Thompson were college students at the time of their deaths. The news has been especially difficult for the academic community and those who knew them personally. Loved ones say the two men had promising futures ahead of them, making the sudden loss even more painful for those who cared about them.

Authorities said the incident occurred inside an apartment located above the Appalachian Wireless building in downtown Pikeville. Police were initially called to the location to perform a welfare check after someone expressed concern about an individual inside the apartment. Officers responded to the call hoping to ensure the person was safe.

When officers arrived and entered the apartment, they made a tragic discovery. Both men were found inside with fatal gunshot wounds. Investigators quickly secured the scene and began examining evidence to determine exactly what had taken place inside the residence.

During a news conference, officials said early evidence suggests the case may be a murder-suicide. However, investigators stressed that the case remains under review while detectives continue gathering information and reviewing the circumstances that led to the deadly incident.

The shocking deaths have deeply affected the Pikeville community. As families and friends mourn, many are choosing to remember Nicholas Hopkins and Travis Thompson not for the tragedy that took their lives, but for the lives they lived—young men with dreams, friendships, and futures that meant so much to those around them. Community members are now offering prayers, comfort, and support to both families during this incredibly difficult time.
