Two Men Dead, Woman Injured in Late-Night shooting in Durham

A late-night shooting in Durham has left two young men dead and a woman injured, prompting an active investigation by the Durham Police Department. The violent incident unfolded just before midnight Friday outside an apartment complex on the city’s north side, sending shockwaves through the local community.

According to police, officers were dispatched to the 3500 block of North Roxboro Street after multiple reports of gunfire in the area near Regency Place Apartments. When officers arrived, they discovered a troubling scene: three individuals sitting inside a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency responders quickly rushed to help the victims as investigators began securing the area.

Authorities said two adult men were pronounced dead at the scene. They were later identified as Tevin Burney, 23, and Jarrett Godfrey, 26, both residents of Durham. A female passenger in the vehicle was also wounded in the shooting but survived. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where doctors treated her for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Friends and members of Durham’s music community say Burney was known locally by the stage name “YBT.” He had been associated with the Durham-based rap collective known as 83 Babies, a group that gained attention in the late 2010s after releasing a viral track titled No Cap in 2018. The song helped bring regional recognition to the group, particularly among younger hip-hop listeners across North Carolina.

Although the collective eventually split up due to internal struggles and legal troubles involving some members, Burney and others connected to the group reportedly continued pursuing independent music careers. Following news of his death, social media quickly filled with messages of grief from fans, friends, and fellow artists who remembered him as a talented performer with strong ties to the city’s hip-hop scene.

Investigators have not yet announced any suspects or shared details about what may have led to the shooting. Detectives are currently interviewing witnesses and reviewing evidence gathered from the scene as they work to determine what happened. Police say the case remains an active investigation, and additional information will be released as authorities learn more about the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
