David Kunes Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on I-80 in Monroe Township

A tragic early-morning crash on Interstate 80 in Monroe Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania claimed the life of a 76-year-old man Wednesday, leaving the community in shock. Authorities say the deadly collision involved a vehicle traveling the wrong way, striking another car head-on during what should have been a routine morning commute.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police in Clarion, troopers responded to the crash at approximately 8:43 a.m. near mile marker 62.6 along the westbound lanes of I-80. Emergency crews were dispatched immediately after reports of a serious collision, arriving quickly to assess the situation and provide assistance to those involved.

Officials identified the victim as David A. Kunes, 76, of Weedville, Pennsylvania. Investigators say Kunes was driving a 2017 Chrysler 300 eastbound in the westbound lanes when his vehicle collided head-on with a 2026 Chevrolet Silverado operated by Joseph M. Maguire, 39, of Morrisdale, Pennsylvania.

Police reported that Kunes was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Maguire, who was properly restrained, sustained suspected minor injuries and was transported to Clarion Hospital for evaluation. Officials noted that his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The crash caused significant damage to both vehicles, which were later towed from the scene. Troopers said that the impact of the collision required coordination between several emergency agencies to safely clear the roadway and provide aid to those involved. Traffic along the westbound lanes of I-80 was temporarily disrupted while crews worked to secure the area.
