IRMO, S.C. — A 45-year-old man has died after a police chase and arrest in Irmo, prompting an independent investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). The man, identified as Byron Jackson of North Augusta, passed away shortly after being taken into custody by the Irmo Police Department in the early hours of Sunday, June 22.
According to officials, the incident began around 2:05 a.m. when Irmo police responded to a report of a possible fight inside a vehicle in the New Friarsgate neighborhood. When officers approached the vehicle, it fled the scene, leading to a brief police pursuit. The chase ended near the Dollar General store on Broad River Road, where officers confronted the driver.
Police say Jackson was involved in a physical struggle with officers before he was restrained and placed under arrest. Shortly after being taken into custody, Jackson began experiencing serious breathing difficulties. Emergency medical personnel were called immediately, and life-saving measures were started by officers and continued by paramedics during transport to the hospital.
Despite efforts to revive him, Jackson was pronounced dead a short time later. Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford confirmed his identity and stated that an autopsy would be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Toxicology reports are also pending, but no official findings have been released to the public.
As is standard procedure in South Carolina for in-custody deaths or use-of-force incidents, SLED was called in the following day to conduct an independent investigation. Two Irmo police officers involved in the arrest have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is underway. This step is typical and meant to ensure transparency during the review process.
The death of Byron Jackson has raised concern in the community, with family members and local advocacy groups demanding answers. Authorities have not provided details about what caused Jackson’s breathing problems or the specific nature of the altercation with officers. The Richland County Coroner’s Office will continue working with SLED as the investigation continues, and further updates will be shared once findings are complete. Meanwhile, many are left waiting and hoping for a clear explanation of what led to Jackson’s tragic and unexpected death.
