LOGAN, IA — A deadly crash on Highway 30 Monday evening has claimed the life of a 30-year-old Manilla man and left another driver seriously injured. The heartbreaking collision has shaken the communities of Logan, Manilla, and Missouri Valley as loved ones struggle to come to terms with the sudden loss.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident happened at approximately 5:42 p.m. near 260th Street, southwest of Logan. Authorities said a 2012 Toyota RAV4 was traveling eastbound on Highway 30 while a 2018 pickup truck was heading westbound. For reasons that are still under investigation, the SUV crossed the centerline and entered the westbound lane.
Officials reported that the two vehicles collided head-on in the westbound lane. The driver of the SUV, identified as 30-year-old Merari Eduviges Perez of Manilla, suffered severe injuries in the crash. Despite the quick response from emergency crews, Perez was pronounced dead as a result of the injuries he sustained. Authorities confirmed that he was wearing his seat belt at the time of the collision.
The driver of the pickup truck, 57-year-old Daryl Jay Fichter of Missouri Valley, was also hurt in the crash. Harrison County EMS transported him to Missouri Valley Hospital for treatment. While officials have not released detailed information about his condition, they confirmed that his injuries were serious. He was also wearing a seat belt during the accident.
Several agencies responded to assist at the scene. The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office and Logan Police worked alongside state troopers to secure the roadway, direct traffic, and gather evidence. The highway was temporarily impacted as crews cleared debris and carefully documented the scene.
The investigation into what caused the SUV to cross the centerline is ongoing. In the meantime, the community is mourning the loss of Merari Eduviges Perez. Family members and friends are remembering him as a valued member of the community whose life ended far too soon. Authorities continue to urge drivers to stay alert and cautious on the road as they work to determine the full circumstances behind this tragic crash.
