A devastating crash on Interstate 20 Friday night claimed the life of a 19-year-old Tennessee woman, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The fatal collision happened just before 8 p.m. near the 92-mile marker in Kershaw County, close to Lugoff. The crash involved multiple large vehicles and shut down portions of the interstate as emergency crews responded.
Master Trooper Hannah Davidson said a 2016 International tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound when it was struck from behind by a 2014 Dodge vehicle. The force of the impact caused the tractor-trailer to veer into the median and overturn. The sudden rollover created a chaotic and dangerous situation along the busy highway.
Investigators reported that after the initial collision, the Dodge continued forward, breaking through the median barrier and crossing into the westbound lanes of traffic. Once there, it collided with a 2026 Volvo tractor-trailer traveling westbound. The chain reaction crash unfolded in seconds, leaving debris scattered across both sides of the interstate and prompting a large emergency response.
The Kershaw County Coroner’s Office identified the driver of the Dodge as 19-year-old Chelsea Emily Moran of Chattanooga. Authorities confirmed that Moran died from injuries she sustained in the crash. Her sudden and tragic death has left her family and community mourning a young life lost far too soon.
Officials have not released additional details regarding injuries to the drivers of the two tractor-trailers. It remains unclear whether anyone else required medical treatment. Traffic in the area was heavily delayed as law enforcement and emergency crews worked through the night to clear the wreckage and document the scene.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Troopers are reviewing evidence, examining vehicle damage, and working to determine what factors may have contributed to the crash. Authorities have not announced any charges at this time. As the investigation moves forward, loved ones remember Chelsea Emily Moran and the life she had ahead of her before tragedy struck on Interstate 20.
