PRAGUE, NE — A devastating crash on Sunday afternoon in Saunders County claimed the life of a young Lincoln woman and left two others injured. The collision occurred around 3:30 p.m. along Highway 79, about two miles north of Prague, and involved two vehicles in a head-on impact, according to the Saunders County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities say 25-year-old Rebekah Guilford of Lincoln was driving a gray Honda Civic northbound when her vehicle crossed over the center line. As she attempted to steer back into her lane, she collided head-on with a southbound black Lincoln MKZ. The violent impact left both vehicles with significant damage, prompting a swift emergency response.
Emergency personnel arrived to find Guilford critically injured. Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Lincoln MKZ, 45-year-old Enereo Cervantes of Columbus, suffered serious injuries and had to be extricated from his vehicle. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. A passenger in Cervantes’ car also sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening and was hospitalized.
Investigators say all individuals involved in the crash were wearing seat belts, which likely helped reduce further injuries. There is no indication that alcohol or drug use contributed to the collision. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, with early findings suggesting that a brief moment of driver error led to the crash.
The loss of Rebekah Guilford has deeply impacted her family, friends, and the Lincoln community. Described by those who knew her as kind and driven, Guilford’s sudden passing has left a void that will not be easily filled. Tributes and messages of condolence have begun appearing on social media, as loved ones mourn her loss.
The Saunders County Sheriff’s Office is urging drivers to stay alert, especially on rural highways like Highway 79. Two-lane roads offer little room for error, and even a momentary lapse can lead to tragic consequences. As the investigation continues, authorities hope this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of cautious and defensive driving.
