HAMMOND, La. — A tragic late-night shooting in Hammond has left the community grieving after a 14-year-old girl lost her life. Tyronai Reed was shot Thursday night, and authorities say the incident involved an 18-year-old local who has since been arrested on a negligent homicide charge.
According to the Hammond Police Department, officers responded around 11:50 p.m. on February 24, 2026, after receiving reports of shots fired. When officers arrived, they found Tyronai Reed suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel provided immediate assistance and transported her to North Oaks Health System. Despite life-saving efforts, Reed later died from her injuries.
Detectives from the department’s Criminal Investigations Division quickly launched a homicide investigation. During their work, they identified 18-year-old Demontez Treyvon “Trey” Robinson of Hammond as a suspect in the shooting. While following leads, officers conducted a traffic stop on a speeding vehicle and confirmed Robinson was the driver. He was taken into custody without incident.
Investigators said Robinson admitted that the firearm discharged while he was handling it, resulting in a single round striking the 14-year-old victim. He was booked into the Hammond City Jail on one count of negligent homicide. Authorities emphasized that the shooting was not intentional but stemmed from careless handling of the weapon.
