23-Year-Old Jamaine Vaughans killed in Fatal Shooting on Carriage Drive in Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred Tuesday morning in the 5500 block of Carriage Drive as 23-year-old Jamaine Vaughans, according to the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office. Vaughans was rushed to a nearby hospital after being found with gunshot wounds but tragically did not survive, officials confirmed Wednesday.

The Evansville Police Department (EPD) said officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving multiple reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered Vaughans suffering from critical injuries. Emergency medical teams provided life-saving aid before transporting him to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds. Authorities immediately launched an investigation to determine the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

Following a swift response by detectives, Drasean Hogan was identified as a suspect and taken into custody. Hogan was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail, though police have not yet released further details about the motive or relationship between the suspect and the victim. An autopsy has been scheduled by the Coroner’s Office to confirm the exact cause and manner of death, which officials say may shed more light on the sequence of events.

EPD detectives are continuing to collect evidence, review security footage, and interview witnesses who may have seen or heard anything unusual in the area. Investigators are urging anyone with additional information to contact the Evansville Police Department or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers. “Every piece of information matters,” a department spokesperson said. “Our goal is to bring answers and justice for Jamaine’s loved ones.”

Neighbors along Carriage Drive expressed deep sadness over the tragedy, describing the area as peaceful and family-oriented. One resident told local media, “We were awakened by sirens and flashing lights. It’s devastating that something like this happened right here in our neighborhood.” Many in the community have offered prayers and condolences to Vaughans’ family, remembering him as a kind and respectful young man whose life was cut far too short.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials are emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in solving violent crimes. Support services have been made available for those affected by the incident, including counseling and victim assistance programs. The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Vaughans’ family has been notified and is receiving support as they grieve. Funeral arrangements will be announced once finalized.
