Teen Fatally Shot by Off-Duty Deputy During Confrontation at Poinciana Walmart

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed Thursday evening during a confrontation at a Walmart in Poinciana, an incident now under active investigation by the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities say the deadly encounter unfolded around 7 p.m. at the Walmart located at 904 Cypress Parkway after store personnel alerted an off-duty deputy to suspected shoplifting.

According to officials, the confrontation began when a loss prevention officer reported that three males were allegedly concealing merchandise in their clothing. The off-duty deputy, who was working security at the store, approached the group as they attempted to flee. Sheriff Chris Blackmon stated that one of the teens was armed with a gun during the encounter, prompting the deputy to open fire. The teen was struck and later pronounced dead.

The sheriff described the deputy’s actions as a response to a perceived threat, saying, “Our deputy fired downrange at the suspect and took him out.” Authorities have not officially released the teen’s name, but family members identified him as Jairus “JJ” Spruill. His mother, Naporsha Jones Spruill, spoke to WESH 2 News, describing her son as a bright, loving young man with a deep passion for football. She said JJ played both running back and quarterback and had earned two MVP rings, noting, “He was full of life, full of love, and full of dreams.”

The shooting has left family members and the community devastated as questions continue to surface regarding the circumstances that led to the deadly exchange. The family has asked for privacy and prayers as they navigate the painful loss of a teenager whose future, they say, held tremendous promise. Authorities confirmed that the two other individuals involved — one juvenile and one adult in his 20s — have been located and identified, though investigators have not stated whether any charges will be filed.

The incident also raises ongoing concerns over use-of-force protocols involving off-duty deputies acting in security roles at retail locations. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is expected to participate in the investigation, standard procedure in shootings involving law enforcement personnel.

As the investigation moves forward, the sheriff’s office is urging anyone with information or cellphone footage from the scene to contact detectives. Meanwhile, the Poinciana community continues to grapple with the tragic death of a 16-year-old whose life ended amid a confrontation that escalated within seconds.
