AMBOY, Neb. — A tragic collision between farm equipment and a freight train claimed the life of a 24-year-old man Thursday morning in Webster County. The crash occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. on February 19, 2026, along Highway 136 near the small community of Amboy. Authorities say the incident led to the derailment of multiple train cars and forced a lengthy highway closure.
Officials identified the driver as Andrew Katzberg, 24. According to investigators, Katzberg was operating a hay grinder eastbound on Highway 136 when it collided with an unloaded freight train at a railroad crossing. The force of the impact caused several train cars to derail, scattering debris near the tracks and roadway. Katzberg was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that his next of kin have been notified.
Emergency responders from multiple agencies rushed to the scene following the crash. The Webster County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol, the Nebraska Department of Transportation, and personnel from BNSF Railway. Crews worked for hours to secure the derailment area and assess damage to both the tracks and surrounding infrastructure.
Authorities have not yet determined what caused the collision. Investigators are examining whether factors such as visibility at the crossing, warning signal functionality, mechanical issues, or other circumstances may have contributed. Officials emphasized that the cause remains undetermined and is under active investigation.
The crash significantly impacted travel in the area. Highway 136 was closed between Red Cloud and Guide Rock from shortly after the accident until approximately 3:00 a.m. on February 20. The extended closure allowed crews to clear wreckage, inspect the railroad crossing, and ensure the roadway and tracks were safe for reopening.
Highway 136 has since reopened to regular traffic, but the investigation continues. Authorities say additional information will be released as findings become available. The fatal incident has left the local agricultural and Webster County communities mourning the sudden loss of a young man in a tragic and unexpected crash.
