Southwest High Mourns Softball Star Angelina Terrazas, 17, After Brave Battle with Cancer

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Southwest High School community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of 17-year-old Angelina Terrazas, a beloved softball player, student, and friend whose courage and spirit left an everlasting mark on everyone who knew her. Angelina passed away on November 8, 2025, after a brave battle with Stage 3 ovarian cancer, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

A standout athlete known for her powerful pitching and unbreakable determination, Angelina was more than just a star player — she was the heart of the Southwest Dragons Softball Team. Her teammates, coaches, and teachers remember her as a fierce competitor and a kind soul who gave her all both on and off the field. “She was a fierce competitor,” said Assistant Coach Taylor Doege, who also served as her pitching coach. “Her teammates played hard behind her because they knew her work ethic. She wasn’t afraid to hold them accountable and lift them up when it mattered most — that’s what made her such a true leader.”

Even after her diagnosis earlier this year, Angelina’s resilience never faltered. In February, she pitched her team’s first district game — striking out 14 batters — not yet realizing she was fighting cancer. When her diagnosis was confirmed, she continued to support her team in every way possible, attending games and practices whenever her health allowed. Her teammates lovingly nicknamed her the “Mother Hen,” for her nurturing spirit and constant encouragement. “She was a great friend and teammate who represented our community so well both on and off the field,” Doege said.

Angelina’s strength and determination inspired not only her teammates but the entire Southwest community. Just before her passing, she was honored by Southwest ISD as the first graduate of the Class of 2026, receiving her high school diploma in a moving ceremony. She was also awarded a full scholarship to the University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky, where she had dreamed of continuing her education and softball career. “She never did anything halfway,” said one of her coaches. “She was a competitor, a force to be reckoned with, and she left a mark that will never fade.”

To celebrate her life and legacy, the Southwest Softball community will hold a Prayer Circle on Tuesday, November 12, at 5:30 p.m. at the Southwest Softball Stadium. Friends, classmates, and supporters are invited to attend, share memories, and offer support to the Terrazas family. All proceeds from items sold at the event will go directly to her family to assist during this difficult time.

As the community continues to mourn, Angelina’s story stands as a powerful reminder of courage, faith, and perseverance. Her love for her teammates, her devotion to the game, and her fighting spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched. She will always be remembered as #AngelinaStrong — forever a Southwest Dragon.
