HAHIRA, Ga. — A Hahira police officer tragically lost his life early Thursday morning when a vehicle struck his patrol car during a traffic stop on northbound Interstate 75 in Lowndes County, according to the Georgia State Patrol. The devastating crash has left the small South Georgia community grieving the sudden loss of a dedicated public servant.
Authorities identified the fallen officer as Caleb Abney of the Hahira Police Department. Investigators said the collision occurred around 12:09 a.m. while Abney had pulled over a Nissan on the east shoulder of I-75. He was seated inside his marked patrol vehicle with emergency lights activated, conducting the stop, when tragedy struck.
According to preliminary findings, a Chevrolet Camaro traveling northbound veered from its lane and crashed into the rear of Abney’s patrol car. The force of the impact pushed the patrol vehicle forward into the Nissan that had been stopped. All three vehicles were forced off the highway, leaving a chaotic and deadly scene along the interstate in the early morning darkness.
Officer Abney was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of his injuries. The driver of the Camaro was transported to South Georgia Medical Center for treatment but later succumbed to their injuries. Officials have not yet released the identity of the Camaro driver pending notification of next of kin.
The Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is leading a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Troopers are working to determine what caused the Camaro to leave its lane and whether factors such as speed, impairment, or distraction may have played a role. Authorities confirmed that Officer Abney’s family has been notified.
