One Dead, Five Injured in Morning Shooting at Hammond Apartment Complex

HAMMOND, La. — A Thursday morning shooting at the Willow Villa apartments on Old Baton Rouge Highway left one man dead and five others injured, according to Tangipahoa Parish authorities. The incident unfolded around 11:30 a.m., sparking chaos among residents and prompting a swift response from law enforcement.

Authorities said the shooting began when Marquanvius Jones opened fire into a crowd. Twenty-six-year-old Javan Myers returned fire and was struck during the exchange. Myers later died from his injuries, while Jones and three others, including a 4-year-old boy, were also hit and taken to hospitals for treatment.

Residents described the scene as frightening and chaotic. One individual, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “I was in the garage, and then I heard gunshots and ran back inside.” Another resident added, “I looked out the window and saw a body lying down. I was scared.” The sudden outbreak of violence left many shaken and fearful in what is normally a quiet apartment complex.

Sheriff Gerald Sticker said the altercation reportedly began over a dispute regarding a request for a ride. “There is no excuse for any disagreement to turn into gun violence, and this is no way for any argument to end,” Sticker said. Authorities are continuing to investigate the details of the confrontation.

Law enforcement is reviewing surveillance footage, speaking with witnesses, and gathering evidence to determine exactly how the exchange of gunfire escalated. Officials have not said whether additional suspects are involved or if anyone has been arrested. The priority remains understanding the events leading up to the shooting and ensuring the safety of residents.

The community is left reeling from the tragic events. Families and neighbors are mourning the loss of Javan Myers while also hoping for the recovery of the injured, including the young child. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office to assist in the ongoing investigation.
