Families Identify Victims in Deadly Tumbler Ridge School Shooting

TUMBLER RIDGE, B.C., Canada — Families of those killed in the tragic mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School on February 10, 2026, have begun identifying their loved ones as the community continues to grieve the devastating loss. The attack claimed multiple lives and has left the small northern British Columbia town in shock.

Among the victims confirmed by family members was 12-year-old Kylie May Smith. Her aunt, Shanon Dycke, described her as a “beautiful, kind, and innocent soul.” In a message shared publicly, Dycke said the family’s “world has crumbled” following Kylie’s death. A fundraiser has been organized to support Kylie’s mother, Desirae, her brother Ethan, and other relatives with travel costs and a memorial to honor her life.

Another young victim has been identified as 12-year-old Abel Mwansa Jr., whose family confirmed his death. Authorities also reported that two additional 12-year-old girls and one teacher were killed during the shooting. The loss of so many young lives has deeply shaken parents, students, and educators throughout the region.

Police confirmed the shooter was 18-year-old Jesse van Rootselaar, who was found dead at the school with what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury. Investigators later discovered two additional victims at his home — his mother and his 11-year-old stepbrother — bringing the total number of fatalities to nine.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, several victims inside the school were found in the library, while one student was located in a stairwell. Authorities continue to investigate the timeline of events and are working to determine the motive behind the attack. Officials have not yet released further details as the investigation remains ongoing.

The Tumbler Ridge community has come together in mourning, with residents leaving flowers, notes, and candles near the school. Grief counselors and support services have been made available to students, staff, and families. As the town struggles to heal, Kylie, Abel, and all the victims are being remembered for the love, light, and joy they brought to those around them.
