LAUREL, S.D. — The Laurel community is mourning the loss of 50-year-old Ryan Sevening, who died Tuesday evening in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 15, just north of Highway 59. The tragic incident involved a northbound SUV and a southbound semi-truck, leaving neighbors and colleagues in shock.
According to Cedar County Sheriff Larry Koranda, the crash occurred around 6:40 p.m. Authorities reported that Sevening was driving a 2025 Ford Bronco northbound when it collided with the trailer of a 2006 Peterbilt semi hauling scrap iron, operated by 47-year-old Joshua Klausen of Laurel. The semi was partially in the northbound lane as it backed into a driveway on the east side of the highway.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but despite efforts to save him, Sevening was pronounced dead at the scene. Sheriff Koranda confirmed that Sevening was wearing his seatbelt and that the Bronco’s airbags deployed. It is unknown whether the semi-truck driver, Klausen, was restrained.
Authorities noted that Sevening was an instructor at Northeast Community College, where colleagues described him as dedicated and compassionate. The loss has left students, faculty, and friends grieving the passing of a man who touched many lives through his work and personal connections.
The crash prompted a significant emergency response. Cedar County authorities were assisted by the Nebraska State Patrol, Nebraska Department of Transportation, Laurel Fire Department, Laurel EMS, Laurel Police Department, and Cedar County Emergency Management. The roadway was temporarily closed while crews secured the scene and investigated the collision.
The Cedar County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, seeking to understand the sequence of events that led to the tragedy. Family, friends, and the Laurel community are keeping Sevening’s loved ones in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time, honoring his life and the positive impact he had on those around him.
