PUEBLO, Colo. — Authorities have identified Joshua Charles Herbert, 39, as the man fatally shot Saturday evening at the Days Inn on Pueblo’s north side. The deadly incident has left family, friends, and the local community shocked as law enforcement continues its investigation.
According to witnesses, the shooting occurred around 6:20 p.m. following an argument near the entrance of a first-floor hotel room. A man was reportedly being yelled at to leave when gunfire erupted, striking Herbert. Emergency responders arrived quickly, and Herbert was pronounced dead at 9 p.m., the Pueblo County Coroner confirmed in a Facebook statement.
Police said the cause and manner of Herbert’s death are pending autopsy results. Authorities also confirmed that a suspect was taken into custody the night of the shooting. On Monday morning, Pueblo Police announced the arrest of 63-year-old James McKenney, who now faces First Degree Murder charges in connection with Herbert’s death.
Witnesses told Pueblo Independent News that shouting could be heard coming from the hotel room before the shooting. One bystander said he removed his family from the area due to the disturbance and later returned to find a heavy police presence, learning that the situation had escalated into a fatal shooting. Sources also indicated that a security guard was on scene and attempted to intervene in the dispute before the shots were fired.
Police initially released a statement Saturday night confirming that a person had died at the scene, though Herbert’s identity had not yet been released. Investigators are gathering evidence, reviewing security footage, and interviewing witnesses as the case remains active.
The Pueblo Police Department is urging anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation. Authorities are committed to providing answers and ensuring public safety while the legal process proceeds against the suspect.
