17-Year-Old Steven Gregoire Killed in Wyoming County Snowmobile Crash

WARSAW, N.Y. — A 17-year-old boy tragically died Sunday in a snowmobile crash in Wyoming County, prompting an investigation by New York State Police. The incident has left the local community grieving and serves as a reminder of the risks involved with recreational snowmobiling.

Troopers responded shortly before 12:15 p.m. to a report of a snowmobile collision on a private trail off Wilder Road in Warsaw. Authorities said Steven Gregoire, 17, of Sheldon, was traveling southbound on a marked trail when he lost control of his snowmobile and struck a log pile. The impact threw him from the vehicle.

A 16-year-old friend who was following behind also lost control and struck the same log pile. That snowmobile ended up on top of Gregoire, worsening the severity of the accident. Other snowmobilers in the area immediately called 911 and assisted at the scene until emergency responders arrived.

Gregoire was transported to Wyoming County Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police confirmed there were no signs of foul play, and the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office is scheduled to conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause of death. Authorities described the accident as a tragic misfortune on the snowy trails.

New York State Police are continuing to investigate the crash to understand exactly what happened and whether any safety measures could have prevented it. Officials are reviewing the scene, examining the snowmobiles involved, and speaking with witnesses. They emphasized that the crash appears to have been an accident rather than the result of reckless behavior.

Authorities are reminding snowmobile riders to exercise extreme caution, especially on private trails and areas with obstacles. The tragic death of Steven Gregoire has left family, friends, and fellow snowmobilers devastated. Officials urge all recreational riders to wear proper safety gear, follow trail markers, and remain alert while riding to prevent similar accidents.
