NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. — Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a 19-year-old man Sunday afternoon in the town of Cape Charles. The tragic incident has left the close-knit community in mourning as authorities work to determine what caused the deadly wreck.
Troopers said the crash occurred at approximately 4:39 p.m. on Arlington Road, between Sherwood Gate and Sapphire Court. The roadway was temporarily impacted as emergency responders arrived on scene to assist and begin the investigation. Residents in the area reported seeing police vehicles and first responders surrounding the crash site.
According to Virginia State Police, a 2018 Buick Enclave was traveling along Arlington Road when it suddenly ran off the right side of the roadway. The vehicle entered a ditch and then overturned multiple times before coming to rest upside down on its roof. The violent nature of the crash caused extensive damage to the vehicle.
The driver was identified as Michael Justin-Travis Rease Jr., 19, of Cape Charles. Troopers said Rease suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities also confirmed that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, a factor often linked to the severity of injuries in rollover accidents.
At this time, police have not released details about what may have caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. Investigators are examining the scene, reviewing vehicle damage, and considering possible contributing factors. Officials have not indicated whether speed, distraction, road conditions, or other elements played a role in the crash.
Virginia State Police say the investigation remains ongoing and additional information will be released as it becomes available. As family and friends grieve the loss of a young life, authorities are reminding drivers of the importance of wearing seatbelts and staying alert behind the wheel. The tragic death of Michael Justin-Travis Rease Jr. serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly a single moment on the road can turn fatal.
