40-year-old Randy Root killed in fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on Highway 67

A tragic crash on Highway 67 in Butler County claimed the life of a Poplar Bluff man on Sunday evening, sending shockwaves through the local community. The deadly incident happened about two miles south of Poplar Bluff and involved a moped, a truck, and several other vehicles. Authorities say the crash unfolded suddenly on the busy highway, turning an ordinary evening into a heartbreaking scene.

Butler County Coroner Jim Akers identified the victim as 40-year-old Randy Root of Poplar Bluff. According to investigators, Root was traveling northbound on a moped along Highway 67 when he was struck from behind by a truck. The force of the collision was severe, causing Root to be thrown from the moped and into the roadway.

After being ejected, Root was struck by three additional vehicles traveling along the highway, authorities said. Emergency responders, including law enforcement and medical personnel, rushed to the scene as traffic quickly backed up in the area. Despite their efforts, Root suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The stretch of Highway 67 where the crash occurred was partially closed for some time to allow crews to secure the area and begin their investigation.

The initial crash also led to further collisions. Officials said two other vehicles crashed into each other during the chaos that followed the first impact. Both drivers involved in that secondary collision sustained minor injuries. They were transported to a hospital in Poplar Bluff for treatment and were later reported to be in stable condition. Authorities confirmed that none of those injuries were considered life-threatening.

Law enforcement officers are continuing to investigate the moments leading up to the crash. Investigators are carefully reviewing damage to all vehicles involved, examining road and lighting conditions, and gathering witness statements. Officials are also looking into whether speed, visibility issues, or driver inattention may have contributed to the deadly collision.

No charges or citations have been announced at this time, and authorities say the investigation remains ongoing. Highway 67 is a heavily traveled roadway used by both local drivers and commercial vehicles. As the community mourns the loss of Randy Root, officials are reminding motorists to slow down, stay alert, and watch closely for mopeds and motorcycles. Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to contact local law enforcement to help bring clarity to this tragic incident.
