Officer Shot, Man Killed in Hoover After Police Respond to Report of Disturbed Person

HOOVER, Ala. — A police officer was shot and a man was found dead Sunday morning after officers responded to a report of a mentally disturbed person at a residence in Hoover, authorities said. The incident unfolded in a quiet neighborhood and remains under investigation as officials work to determine the full sequence of events.

Hoover Police Chief Clay Morris said officers were dispatched around 7:49 a.m. to a home in the 2000 block of River Lake Drive. Police were responding to a call involving a man who was reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis. When officers arrived at the residence, the situation quickly escalated.

According to Chief Morris, a 38-year-old man brandished a handgun at a family member. When officers attempted to intervene, the man allegedly began firing. During the exchange, one Hoover police officer was struck by gunfire. The officer was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Chief Morris said the injured officer is currently in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. Fellow officers returned fire during the incident, striking the suspect. The 38-year-old man was also taken to the hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.

While securing the scene, authorities made another grim discovery. The Shelby County Coroner’s Office confirmed that officers found the body of 71-year-old Glenn Adrian Griggs in the driveway of the residence. Officials have not released details about how Griggs died or his relationship to the suspect, and it remains unclear when or where he was fatally injured.

The incident is now being investigated by multiple agencies, including the Hoover Police Department and the Shelby County Coroner. Authorities have not yet said whether the shooting involving officers is connected to Griggs’ death. Police said additional information will be released as investigators continue reviewing evidence, conducting interviews, and reconstructing the events. Officials emphasized that this is an active investigation and asked the public for patience as more facts become available.
