BEAVER COUNTY, Pa. — A Friday evening crash in Beaver County turned deadly after an elderly woman was killed in a head-on collision on Freedom Crider Road in New Sewickley Township. The tragic incident forced the closure of a major stretch of roadway for several hours as police investigated what went wrong.
The crash occurred just after 6 p.m. on Friday. Denise Babyak, 68, of Harmony, was reportedly traveling westbound on Freedom Crider Road when her vehicle crossed into the eastbound lane. Moments later, her car collided head-on with another vehicle approaching from the opposite direction.
Emergency crews were quickly dispatched to the scene after the crash was reported. Due to the force of the impact, Babyak suffered severe injuries. Despite the efforts of first responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities later confirmed her identity after notifying her family.
The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash was not injured, police said. That driver remained at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators. No additional injuries were reported, and there were no passengers in either vehicle at the time of the collision, according to officials.
Freedom Crider Road was closed between State Route 989 and Lovi Road for approximately three hours following the crash. The closure allowed emergency crews to remove damaged vehicles, clean debris from the roadway, and gave investigators time to carefully document evidence and reconstruct the crash. Traffic was diverted through nearby roads during the closure.
New Sewickley Township Police are leading the investigation into the crash. At this time, authorities have not released details about what may have caused Babyak’s vehicle to cross the center line. Police have not said whether speed, distraction, medical issues, or road conditions played a role.
