23-Year-Old Construction Worker Killed in Tragic Excavator Accident in McCurtain County

MCCURTAIN COUNTY, Okla. — A routine workday turned deadly Thursday morning when a 23-year-old construction worker was killed in a tragic equipment accident in southeastern Oklahoma. Authorities say the young man died after being struck by a heavy counterweight while working on an excavator in Idabel.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the victim was identified as Ryan Moore, a resident of Heavener. The fatal incident happened around 9:13 a.m. on February 5 at a construction site in Idabel. Investigators said Moore was in the process of disassembling a counterweight from the back of an excavator when the massive piece of equipment unexpectedly fell.

Troopers said the counterweight struck Moore, causing severe injuries. Emergency responders were called to the scene, but despite efforts to help him, Moore was pronounced dead. Officials did not release details about whether anyone else was present at the time of the accident or how long Moore had been working at the site.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is handling the investigation and working to determine exactly what led to the counterweight falling. At this time, authorities have not said whether mechanical failure, human error, or safety procedures may have played a role. The incident remains under investigation, and additional information is expected to be released once the review is complete.

Moore’s death has deeply impacted the local community, particularly in Heavener, where friends and family described him as a hardworking young man with his whole life ahead of him. Construction accidents, while rare, serve as a sobering reminder of the dangers workers can face on job sites, especially when dealing with heavy machinery and equipment.

Workplace safety officials often stress the importance of strict safety protocols when operating or repairing large construction machines. Even a brief moment or small error can have devastating consequences. Investigators will likely examine whether proper procedures were followed and if any safety measures failed during Thursday’s incident.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging construction companies and workers to review safety practices to help prevent similar tragedies. The loss of Ryan Moore marks another heartbreaking reminder of the risks faced by construction workers every day. His death is being mourned across McCurtain County as officials work to understand how the accident happened and how future incidents might be avoided.
