CLEARWATER, Fla. — A 60-year-old Clearwater man was killed Wednesday night after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene on Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard, according to the Clearwater Police Department. Authorities identified the victim as Elbert Gilbert, whose death has sparked an active hit-and-run investigation as police search for the driver responsible.
The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. as Gilbert was crossing Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard in a marked crosswalk, officers said. Police believe the vehicle involved may be a red Ford Mustang from the 2020s with front-end damage. After striking Gilbert, the driver did not stop to render aid and fled the area, leaving the victim critically injured in the roadway.
Emergency crews responded quickly, and Gilbert was transported to a local hospital as a trauma alert with life-threatening injuries. Despite aggressive medical treatment, he later died from those injuries Wednesday night. Clearwater police confirmed there were no other reported injuries or vehicles involved in the crash.
Investigators say the incident occurred along one of Clearwater’s busiest roadways. Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard runs east to west across the city and is heavily traveled by commuters, commercial traffic, and residents, especially during evening hours. The corridor includes multiple intersections and crosswalks, making pedestrian safety a continued concern for local authorities.
The Clearwater Police Department is urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about the suspect vehicle to come forward. Officers are especially interested in drivers who may have seen a red Mustang with visible damage before or after the collision. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 727-562-4242. Tips from the public, police say, could be critical in identifying the driver.
Hit-and-run crashes resulting in death are considered felony offenses under Florida law, carrying serious criminal penalties. Police often rely on witness statements, traffic cameras, and physical evidence to solve these cases. As the investigation continues, authorities are reminding drivers to remain alert, slow down in high-traffic areas, and watch for pedestrians, particularly at night. Officials say the focus remains on finding the driver and bringing accountability in the death of Elbert Gilbert.
