MALIBU, Calif. — Authorities have identified the teenager killed in a tragic crash along Malibu Canyon Road Wednesday morning as Hunter Langley, 16, a student-athlete at Sierra Canyon School. The deadly incident occurred when a Tesla went over the side of the roadway, prompting a large emergency response and leaving a school community in mourning.
The crash was reported around 7:40 a.m. Wednesday, just north of Potter Drive, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. First responders rushed to the canyon route after receiving reports that a vehicle had gone over the edge of the road. Upon arrival, crews located the vehicle down an embankment and began emergency operations in the difficult terrain.
The California Highway Patrol confirmed the vehicle involved was a 2018 Tesla Model S. Authorities said Langley was pronounced dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner later officially identified him and confirmed his age as 16. No other injuries were reported in connection with the crash.
Langley was a well-known member of the Sierra Canyon School community in Chatsworth, where he was a student and varsity football player with the Trailblazers. Following confirmation of his death, the school canceled all athletic events scheduled for Wednesday, including the Mission League boys’ basketball tournament final against Notre Dame. School officials acknowledged Langley’s involvement in athletics as they announced the cancellations, reflecting the deep impact of the loss.
Malibu Canyon Road is a heavily traveled route connecting the Pacific Coast Highway to the San Fernando Valley and is known for its winding curves, steep drop-offs, and narrow lanes. The stretch near Potter Drive is a two-lane roadway frequently used by commuters, residents, and school traffic traveling between Malibu and Valley communities. The canyon has a long history of serious crashes due to its geography and challenging driving conditions.
Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel and CHP officers remained on scene for several hours Wednesday morning as investigators worked to determine what caused the Tesla to leave the roadway. Traffic in the area was impacted while emergency crews accessed the vehicle and secured the scene. Authorities have not said whether speed, road conditions, or mechanical issues played a role. The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional details have been released.
