SPENCER, Mass. — A deadly police confrontation unfolded in Spencer Tuesday evening, leaving one man dead and a police officer injured. Authorities have identified the man killed as 35-year-old Patrick Madison. The violent encounter shocked the quiet town and drew heavy police response.

The events began around 5 p.m. when Spencer police responded to reports of someone injured near 20 Main Street.
