SPENCER, Mass. — A deadly police confrontation unfolded in Spencer Tuesday evening, leaving one man dead and a police officer injured. Authorities have identified the man killed as 35-year-old Patrick Madison. The violent encounter shocked the quiet town and drew heavy police response.

The events began around 5 p.m. when Spencer police responded to reports of someone injured near 20 Main Street. Officers found a person with a gunshot wound and quickly called for emergency medical assistance. The injured individual was later taken to UMass Medical Center. About 12 minutes later, officers spotted a man matching the suspect’s description near West Main Street. When police approached, gunfire erupted. Madison fled on foot, prompting a tense pursuit through the area as officers tried to contain the situation.

Madison ran into a nearby Family Dollar store, where SWAT officers were called to assist. Inside the store, officers located Madison hiding in a closed bathroom.
