SANTA FE, N.M. — A fatal single-vehicle crash on Interstate 25 has claimed the life of a local man, prompting a closure of the southbound exit onto northbound St. Francis Drive while authorities continue their investigation. The incident occurred Tuesday evening, February 3, 2026, at approximately 7:59 p.m., according to the Santa Fe Regional Emergency Communications Center.
Police officers from Patrol Team B arrived at the scene and determined that the vehicle had rolled over, ejecting the driver. The driver, Angelo Romero, 31, of Santa Fe, was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Unfortunately, Romero was struck by multiple vehicles after being ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin were notified following the crash.
The Santa Fe Police Traffic Unit and Crime Scene Unit responded to process the scene. The investigation is ongoing, and police are actively collecting evidence to determine the cause of the rollover and the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. The crash is being investigated under SFPD Case Number 2026001144.
As a result of the crash, the southbound exit of I-25 onto northbound St. Francis Drive remains closed. Police are advising drivers who need to access St. Francis Drive northbound to use the Old Pecos Trail exit as an alternate route while the scene is processed. Authorities warned that delays should be expected in the area.
Investigators said preliminary information shows that the vehicle was traveling alone before leaving the roadway and rolling over. Police have not released further details regarding speed, alcohol, or other contributing factors, emphasizing that the investigation is ongoing.
