Elizabeth Otten Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle on Henniker Street in Hillsboro

HILLSBORO, N.H. — An 82-year-old Hillsboro woman has died following a pedestrian crash Tuesday evening, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities. Police said the incident occurred during the early evening hours along a stretch of roadway where visibility can be limited.

According to the Hillsboro Police Department, officers, along with Fire and Rescue personnel, were dispatched around 5:30 p.m. on February 3, 2026, to the area of 27 Henniker Street for a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian. When first responders arrived, they found a woman who had been struck while attempting to cross the roadway.

Investigators said the pedestrian was crossing Henniker Street when she was hit by a vehicle traveling eastbound. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Stephen Gallagher, 55, of Hillsboro. Police said Gallagher immediately stopped after the collision, rendered aid to the injured pedestrian, and remained at the scene. Authorities confirmed he fully cooperated with investigators.

The pedestrian was identified as Elizabeth Otten, 82, of Hillsboro. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, Otten suffered severe injuries and was later pronounced dead. Officials said her death has deeply impacted the local community, particularly residents who live along the busy roadway.

Henniker Street was temporarily closed to traffic as police conducted a detailed investigation of the scene. Officers documented evidence, examined vehicle damage, and evaluated roadway conditions. According to police, preliminary findings suggest that poor lighting conditions, limited visibility, and a curve in the roadway may have contributed to the crash. Investigators emphasized that the findings are preliminary and that all aspects of the incident remain under review.

The Hillsboro Police Department continues to investigate the crash and is asking for the public’s assistance.
