A tragic overnight shooting in Bessemer has claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy, marking another heartbreaking loss of young life to gun violence. Authorities say the incident unfolded in the early hours of Friday, leaving a neighborhood shaken and a family mourning the sudden death of a teenager with his whole life ahead of him.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Korderrian De’Vante Sims, Jr., 16, of Bessemer. According to the coroner, Sims suffered gunshot wound injuries during a reported assault in the 700 block of 28th Terrace South, a residential area where police were called following reports of violence.
Officials said Sims was injured around 12:00 a.m. on Jan. 31, 2026. First responders arrived at the scene and worked to assist the teen, but his injuries were severe. Authorities remained on scene for several hours as they investigated and secured the area.
Despite those efforts, Sims did not survive. The coroner’s office confirmed that he was pronounced dead at approximately 4:46 a.m., at the same location where the shooting occurred. His death has been ruled a homicide, adding to growing concerns about youth violence in the area.
The Bessemer Police Department is leading the investigation into the shooting. At this time, police have not released information about possible suspects, arrests, or what may have led up to the assault. Investigators are working to piece together the events of the night and determine who was responsible.
Police officials said all questions regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting are being handled by the Bessemer Police Department as the investigation continues. Authorities are expected to interview witnesses, review evidence from the scene, and follow up on any leads. As the community searches for answers, Sims’ death serves as a painful reminder of the devastating impact gun violence continues to have on young lives and families across the region.
