36-year-old Kristin Gheen Killed in fatal Fauquier County Crash on Route 17

A deadly early-morning crash claimed the life of a Fauquier County woman on Sunday, leaving investigators searching for answers and reminding drivers of the dangers on rural roads. Virginia State Police say the fatal single-vehicle accident happened around 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 1 along Route 17 near Dyes Lane.

According to police, a 2019 Kia Forte was traveling northbound on Route 17 when the vehicle suddenly left the roadway. Investigators say the car ran off the right side of the road and slammed into a tree with significant force. The impact caused severe damage to the vehicle, prompting an emergency response to the scene.

When troopers arrived, they found the driver suffering from fatal injuries. Despite their efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. She was later identified as Kristin L. Gheen, 36, of Sumerduck. Authorities confirmed that she was the only person inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Police also revealed that Gheen was not wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred. While the exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined, investigators say the lack of a seatbelt may have contributed to the severity of her injuries. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Route 17, which runs through parts of Fauquier County, is known for stretches of dark roadway and limited lighting, especially during overnight hours. State police have not said whether speed, alcohol, or weather conditions played a role, but those factors are being considered as part of the ongoing investigation.

The crash remains under investigation by Virginia State Police as troopers continue to review evidence from the scene. Officials are reminding drivers to slow down, remain alert, and always wear seatbelts, especially during late-night and early-morning travel. For now, a family and community are left mourning the sudden loss of a life taken far too soon.
