Pell City Man Dies After Being Ejected in Interstate 20 Crash in Jefferson County

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. — A tragic crash on Interstate 20 in Jefferson County claimed the life of a Pell City man Friday, January 30, as state troopers continue to investigate what caused the deadly wreck. The incident happened near the Leeds city limits and resulted in one death and another person being injured.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Robby S. Isbell, 38, was driving a truck on Interstate 20 near the 140-mile marker when the vehicle left the roadway. Troopers said the truck traveled off the road, struck a ditch, and then overturned, causing significant damage.

Investigators reported that Isbell was ejected from the truck during the crash. Authorities confirmed that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the wreck. Emergency crews responded quickly and found Isbell suffering from severe injuries at the scene.

Isbell was transported to UAB Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he later died from his injuries, ALEA officials said. His death adds to the growing number of fatal crashes on Alabama highways and highlights the dangers of being unrestrained during a rollover accident.

A passenger who was also inside the truck was injured in the crash and was taken to UAB Hospital for treatment as well. Officials have not released the passenger’s identity or the extent of their injuries, but confirmed the person survived. Troopers said no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The wreck happened along a busy stretch of I-20 near the Leeds city limits, an area known for heavy traffic. Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including what caused the truck to leave the roadway. No additional details have been released at this time.

Authorities are using this incident to remind drivers of the importance of wearing seatbelts at all times. Troopers say seatbelts significantly reduce the risk of being ejected during a crash and can mean the difference between life and death. The investigation remains ongoing, and more information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
