Youth Hockey Trip Turns Tragic After Van Collides With Snowplow on I-70

CLEAR CREEK COUNTY, Colo. — A routine trip to a youth hockey tournament ended in tragedy on January 29, 2026, when a crash involving a Colorado Department of Transportation snowplow claimed the life of 38-year-old Manuel Alejandro Lorenzana Villegas. The deadly collision happened along Interstate 70 in Clear Creek County and left several children and adults injured, deeply impacting families and the youth sports community.

Villegas was driving a Sprinter van carrying members of the Santa Clarita Lady Flyers, a girls’ hockey team made up of players under the age of 12. He was also the father of one of the young athletes on board. Authorities said Villegas died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

According to investigators, the crash occurred when a CDOT snowplow driver lost control while traveling on I-70. The snowplow crossed the median and struck the van, causing it to veer off the roadway and crash down an embankment. Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene and transported the injured to a nearby hospital.

Seven other people were hurt in the crash, including four children and three adults. Officials said all four children were treated and later released from the hospital. Of the adults injured, two remained hospitalized in serious condition, while another adult was listed in fair condition. Authorities did not release the names of the injured.

Despite the devastating loss, the Santa Clarita Lady Flyers chose to continue their tournament schedule in the days following the crash. Team officials said the decision was made to honor Villegas, his daughter, and the strength of the young athletes. Many described the girls’ determination to play as a powerful display of unity, courage, and resilience during an incredibly painful time.

The crash remains under investigation as officials work to determine the exact factors that led to the snowplow losing control. CDOT and law enforcement have not announced whether charges will be filed. As the investigation continues, the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of winter driving and the heavy toll such accidents can take on families and communities. Friends, teammates, and loved ones continue to mourn Villegas, remembering him as a devoted father who was supporting his child and her team when his life was tragically cut short.
