WILMINGTON, N.C. — A quiet Monday evening in Wilmington turned deadly after a young man was shot and later died from his injuries, police said. The shooting happened in a residential area, leaving neighbors shaken and prompting an active homicide investigation by local authorities.
According to the Wilmington Police Department, officers were alerted to possible gunfire around 6 p.m. Monday after a ShotSpotter system detected shots in the 800 block of Emory Street. ShotSpotter is a technology used by police to quickly locate where gunshots may have occurred, helping officers respond faster to violent incidents.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found 20-year-old Dajour Ellison suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Police and emergency responders worked quickly to provide aid before Ellison was rushed to Novant Health Regional Medical Center for treatment. Despite doctors’ efforts, Ellison later died from his injuries at the hospital.
Police have not released details about what led up to the shooting or whether any suspects have been identified. Investigators have confirmed the case is being treated as a homicide and say they are actively working to gather evidence, review possible surveillance footage, and speak with witnesses who may have been in the area at the time.
The shooting has raised concerns among residents living near Emory Street, many of whom say they were surprised by the violence so early in the evening. Some neighbors reported hearing loud noises and seeing a heavy police presence shortly after. Community members say they hope answers come soon and that those responsible are held accountable.
