Travis Reed killed in Fiery Head-On Crash Near Bushland in Fort Worth

POTTER COUNTY, Texas — A violent head-on crash near Bushland ended in flames Wednesday night, killing a 27-year-old Fort Worth man and injuring two others, including a child. The deadly wreck unfolded on a rural highway and drew a large emergency response as firefighters worked to control the blaze and assist victims.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred around 7:06 p.m. on RM 2381, just north of Bushland. Troopers said two vehicles were traveling in opposite directions when one suddenly crossed into oncoming traffic, triggering a devastating collision that would quickly turn deadly.

Investigators said a 2001 Honda Accord, driven by Travis Reed, 27, of Fort Worth, was traveling south on RM 2381. At the same time, a 2017 Ford Expedition, driven by Dusty Dickerson, 40, of Channing, was heading north. For reasons still unknown, DPS said the Honda drifted into the northbound lane and slammed head-on into the SUV.

The impact caused the Ford Expedition to burst into flames almost immediately. The SUV became fully engulfed, creating a frightening scene for those involved and for passing drivers. Despite the intense fire, Dickerson and a 12-year-old female passenger were able to escape the burning vehicle before it was consumed by flames.

First responders arrived to find Reed suffering from severe injuries inside the Honda Accord. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said the crash highlights how quickly a routine drive can turn fatal, especially on undivided rural roadways.

Dickerson was rushed to an Amarillo hospital with serious injuries, while the 12-year-old passenger was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Their current conditions have not been released. DPS said troopers are continuing to investigate what caused the Honda to cross into the opposite lane.

The roadway was partially closed for several hours as investigators documented the scene and crews cleared wreckage and debris. As the investigation continues, officials are urging drivers to stay alert, avoid distractions, and use caution on rural highways. One family is now mourning an unexpected loss, while others recover from a terrifying and life-altering crash.
