Robert Espinoza Dies After Street Racing Crash on San Antonio’s East Side; Two Charged

SAN ANTONIO, TX — Authorities have confirmed that 33-year-old Robert Espinoza has died from injuries he sustained in a violent crash linked to an alleged street race late Wednesday night on San Antonio’s East Side. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Espinoza on Saturday, though his official cause and manner of death remain under review.

According to the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), the crash happened around 11:30 p.m. along the 8700 block of Interstate 10 East, between North Foster Road and Farm-to-Market Road 1516. Investigators said two vehicles — a BMW M4 and a BMW 3 Series — were reportedly racing on the highway when one of them struck Espinoza’s Nissan, sparking a deadly chain reaction.

Police said the BMW M4 collided with Espinoza’s car, causing it to roll over several times before coming to rest. The M4 then hit a nearby concrete barrier, while the BMW 3 Series continued down the road. Emergency crews quickly arrived and rushed Espinoza to a hospital, but despite lifesaving efforts, he later passed away.

The drivers accused of racing — 20-year-old Kyle Jin Liu and 20-year-old Evan Moreno — were arrested and charged with racing resulting in serious bodily injury. Authorities said additional charges may follow now that the crash has turned fatal. Jail records show both men were booked into the Bexar County Jail and later released on Saturday. Details surrounding their release have not been disclosed.

Investigators are continuing to analyze surveillance footage, crash data, and witness statements to determine exactly how the deadly collision unfolded. Law enforcement officials have also acknowledged community concerns about ongoing street racing along that stretch of Interstate 10, an issue residents say has become increasingly dangerous in recent years.

The tragedy has left Espinoza’s family and friends grieving the loss of a man described as kind, hardworking, and full of life. Authorities are urging anyone with information or footage related to the incident to contact the SAPD Traffic Investigations Division or Crime Stoppers of San Antonio. Police stress that illegal racing endangers everyone on the road and warn that offenders face severe consequences, including jail time and vehicle impoundment.
