Miami-Dade Deputy Devin Jaramillo & Steven Rustrian died After Tragic Shooting During Traffic Stop

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL — A routine response to a minor traffic crash turned deadly Friday night when Deputy Devin Jaramillo, 29, and Steven David Rustrian, 21, both lost their lives in a shocking confrontation near Southwest 128th Street in the Kendall area. Authorities say what began as a simple traffic matter quickly escalated into tragedy, leaving the Miami-Dade community heartbroken.

According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO), Deputy Jaramillo responded to a report of a fender bender near an Enterprise Rent-a-Car location around 12214 SW 128th Street. Investigators said Rustrian, involved in the crash, parked a short distance from the scene and switched seats with his boyfriend—an apparent attempt to avoid responsibility. When the deputy arrived and began questioning the pair, witnesses confirmed Rustrian had been the driver at the time of the accident.

Authorities said a tense exchange followed, leading to a violent struggle between Rustrian and Deputy Jaramillo. During the altercation, Rustrian reportedly gained control of the deputy’s firearm and radio. In moments of chaos, he allegedly fired multiple shots, striking the deputy before turning the gun on himself inside the patrol car. Emergency crews rushed Jaramillo to a nearby hospital, but despite valiant efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. Rustrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Miami-Dade Sheriff Cordero-Stutz described Deputy Jaramillo as a “homegrown hero” — born at Baptist Hospital, a graduate of Killian High School, and Magna Cum Laude from the University of Central Florida. “He could have done anything, but he chose to serve,” the sheriff said. “He gave everything in the line of duty to protect this community.” A solemn procession followed Friday night, as law enforcement vehicles lined the streets to honor Jaramillo. Fire rescue crews raised an American flag as his transport vehicle passed beneath in a moving tribute.

Officials clarified that two individuals questioned at the scene — Rustrian’s boyfriend and another witness — were not involved in the shooting and have been released. Investigators continue to review body camera footage and witness statements to determine what caused the situation to spiral out of control.

Deputy Jaramillo, remembered for his compassion and professionalism, served several years with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office. “His service and courage will never be forgotten,” the department said in a statement. “We ask the community to keep his loved ones in their prayers during this difficult time.”
